The Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club (SCVRC) sets aside Saturdays from
10:30 to 2 pm for the purpose of introducing, and cultivating,
tournament level small-bore rifle marksmanship skills for juniors
(SCVRC Junior Program). The program utilizes the NRA/Winchester
Marksmanship Qualification program with single shot bolt action
small-bore rifles at 50 feet. The range is limited to 5 firing
points, and the program is “first come, first served”; participants
are expected to be patient and cooperative during busy periods.
Due to the limited availability of appropriately trained coaches and
instructors, and demands for participation, certain modifications to
the SCVRC Junior Program shall be implemented effective May 19, 2012.
If your son or daughter is presently participating in our program,
but has not met one or more of the new requirements set forth below,
then they are encouraged to continue their participation
(grand-fathered).
If you are in the process of involving your child but they do not
meet the requirements below, then we apologize for any inconvenience
– these changes are as much a matter of safety as ensuring success.
To participate in this program junior program candidates must:
• Be at least 12 years old.
• Sign (parent or legal guardian must be physically present) waiver
and release documents
• Successfully complete the NRA First Steps class
o Children as young as 10 may attend First Steps, but are not
eligible for the Junior Program until 12.
• Demonstrate an ability to safely and competently operate a
small-bore tournament rifle.
o The weight and balance of the rifle can be especially challenging
for children of smaller stature; the coaches may advise delaying
participation until the junior develops the strength and coordination
to participate in a meaningful manner. It may take two or three
visits before coaches can determine if the new shooter is well enough
developed to fully participate.
• Maintain regular attendance in the program.
o Regular attendance is a strong determinate for success in any
program – we recognize that there are numerous demands on family
time, and periodic pauses in attendance are to be expected.
It should be no secret that kids who are successful in nearly any
endeavor have strong parental support. While parents are NOT required
to be present at all times, or during every event, parental
involvement is highly recommended and encouraged!
We deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we implement
these changes – our goal is to provide a safe learning environment
that is comfortable, and manageable, for everyone involved.

The 10th St. San Jose Municipal Firing Range and the SCVRC Juniors' programs have benefited from multiple thousands of dollars in grants from the NRA Foundation over the past 7 years.
These grants have enabled the SCVRC to upgrade the SJ-PRNS 10th Street Range Facility interior with new cabinetry, Troy Board™ acoustic panels and new shooting benches. The SCVRC Juniors'
program has obtained critical teaching materials, shooting coats, spotting scopes, and competition-level air rifles. These improvements would not have been possible without the generous
support of the NRA Foundation. The SCVRC, Inc. strongly encourages your support of the NRA Foundation by attending Friends of NRA dinners. Without your continued support, grants such as
these would not be available.
